With Central Washington University being located in an area where water is a necessity to keep the grass green and healthy. Switching Central Washington University’s football field from grass to turf has many benefits. Central Washington University will be able to use the field more hours per day with no field recovery time needed, use it for more months out of the year in almost any type of weather, save on maintenance costs such as re-sodding, watering and mowing, and cutting out harmful chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides. Natural grass requires regular watering, fertilizing, mowing, seeding and pest control. On average it takes 50,000 gallons of water a week to water a football field. With the price rates of water in Ellensburg Washington 50,000 gallons a week add up to roughly $85. To keep the field green and in the best playing conditions for the whole year it would cost the school $4,420. When it comes to mowing there is a cost for the worker, cost for the gas, and cost for the machine. Along with those costs the lawn mower is also releasing chemicals when being used causing pollution. With the installation of a turf field it will reduce the amount of herbicides and pesticides that the school will use, which cuts down on pollution of harmful chemicals. Artificial turf does require some maintenance, including brushing, and watering but maintenance of an artificial field is less continuous and less expensive than for natural grass.
